STU BORMAN, C&EN WASHINGTON
For those few of you who have not read every word of every science and technology story C&EN has published this year, here is the CliffsNotes version of important developments you may have missed. In this year-end review, we've condensed and summarized many of this year's noteworthy chemical advances in a range of areas--from organic chemistry to molecular medicine, and from genomics and proteomics to physical chemistry.
Our selections require judgment, and that judgment may not always be perfect. Also, we've favored items that we had already selected for coverage in C&EN. So we're by no means claiming that absolutely everything of importance that happened this year in chemistry is described here.
But despite any flaws in the process, we believe the effort to identify milestones in the chemical research year is a worthwhile endeavor. Viewed together and in context with one another, these summaries provide a conveniently accessible snapshot of the enormous progress made each and every year in chemistry.
