BENEATH BONE'S HARD EXTERIOR IS LIVING TISSUE


Bone is a highly structured, porous matrix of hydroxapatite, Ca5 (PO4)3OH, interlaced with collagen fibers and blood vessels. Cells called osteoblasts and osteoclasts continuously remodel bone; their actions are orchestrated by a host of hormones and bone growth factors.
