"Madeleine Jacobs has the vision and the vibrancy to embrace new opportunities in the 21st century," says Board Chair Nina I. McClelland. "She brings to this position nearly three decades of proven leadership and management at major scientific and technical organizations, a passion for and knowledge of chemistry, and a reputation as a dedicated ambassador for the chemical enterprise. She is well poised to lead the organization." Richard N. Zare, a Stanford University chemistry professor and a former chair of the National Science Board, is delighted. "Few people appreciate both the research enterprise and the chemistry industrial enterprise so well as Madeleine does," he says. "She has won the respect of the best of American chemical researchers." "Madeleine's experience at C&EN has given her tremendous insights into and understanding of the strengths and challenges of the global chemical industry," says Thomas M. Connelly Jr., DuPont chief science and technology officer. "We felt her energy and interest in involving us in ACS, and this has drawn many of us closer to the society. We look forward to working with her in her new role." A chemist and journalist, Jacobs is also a sought-after public speaker. This year, she was awarded an honorary doctorate of science from George Washington University for advancing chemistry and women in science. She has received dozens of other awards, including the ACS Award for Encouraging Women into Careers in the Chemical Sciences (2003). Jacobs earned a B.S. degree in chemistry from George Washington University (1968) and completed course work for a master's degree in organic chemistry at the University of Maryland. Early in her career, she was a C&EN reporter (1969–72). Before rejoining the C&EN staff in 1993 as managing editor, she worked at the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Standards & Technology, and the Smithsonian Institution. In 1995, she became C&EN's editor-in-chief.
