Al Hill is the mayor of Zion, Ill., a 25,000-resident community on the shore of Lake Michigan, 72 km north of Chicago. Two reactors at Zion Nuclear Power Station began generating power in 1973 and operated until 1998. Since then, the plant has been successfully decommissioned. By the end of this year, most concrete structures and the reactor cores will be hauled to low-level radioactive disposal sites elsewhere, Hill says.

He was an active member and elder of Zion Lutheran Church in Painesville, Ohio. He was an avid gardener and a lifetime member of the Madison Country Club, where he continued to play golf into his 90s. His wife of 56 years, Martha, died in 2003. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Chase; his sons, William and John; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

SmartCells’ technology, developed at MIT by Todd Zion, allows insulin to be released only within a specific range of blood glucose concentration. Dicerna Pharmaceuticals and Kyowa Hakko Kirin have expanded an RNAi research collaboration to include immunology and inflammation. In January, Kyowa Hakko signed a deal worth up to $1.4 billion to use Dicerna’s RNAi delivery system to develop oncology treatments.

Ergle, a research chemist retired from the Department of Agriculture, died on Nov. 24, 2004, at the age of 101.

The future, Andersen says, can be seen near Chicago at a decommission project just getting under way at Exelon’s Zion 1 and 2 reactors. Taken together, the reactors are the largest ever to be decommissioned. The two plants ended operations in 1996, notes Craig Nesbit, an Exelon spokesman. Since then, the plants have simply sat idle.
