Spirit, which landed on Jan. 4 on a plane inside the large Gusev crater, used its rock abrasion tool to expose a pristine surface on a football-sized rock called Adirondack. Rover scientists confirmed that the rock is composed of volcanic basalt. LAGUNA HOLLOW The pebbles and cracks visible in this false-color image suggest a surface that expands and contracts.
As a result, the condition of some New England lakes has improved, but the acidity of most of New York's Adirondack lakes has remained fairly constant, and some of these lakes are continuing to acidify. To fully restore the most sensitive lakes, more stringent regulations will be required, the report says.
The lake is in northeastern Pennsylvania and more buffered from the effects of acid rain than, for example, the mountain lakes of the Adirondacks. Nonetheless, through the years we have monitored the lake as it slowly turned acidic. The acid and otherwise polluted air have also changed the regional ecosystems, including our property.
Tours of the Adirondacks including Lake Placid and Alex Bay will be offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. These tours vary in price from $30 to $40. Preregistration is required. Short Courses There will be two short courses at the meeting: "Laboratory Safety" and "Conducting Polymers." The registration fee for each course is $150.
