To date, 95 chemical landmarks have been designated, principally in the US. The first, in 1993, honored Leo Hendrick Baekeland and the invention of Bakelite, the world’s first completely synthetic plastic. Other notable people and advances that have been recognized include Joseph Priestley and the discovery of oxygen; Rachel Lloyd, the first American woman to earn a doctoral degree in chemistry; the discovery and development of penicillin; the legacy of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring; the discovery of transuranium elements at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; the development of Tide synthetic detergent; the discovery of fullerenes; and St.

The study also found that White principal investigators (PIs) have secured NSF funding at increasing rates since at least 1999, a finding that contrasts with a common sentiment among White researchers that they have had more difficulty acquiring funding over time, says Christine Chen, a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, who led the work.

“She really wants to work at this interface of disciplines between chemistry, polymer science, biology, and materials,” says polymer chemist Ron Zuckermann of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where Tran worked before starting her PhD. Tran’s group in Toronto has explored novel materials, including peptide-like polymers called peptoids that self-assemble into nanomaterials; polymers that can be made from crops and other renewable sources; and soft, flexible bottlebrush polymers.

Folt, who became a principal investigator on the project, says it was a testament to Wetterhahn’s reputation that so many people trusted her leadership and wanted to be part of the project. The project also showed Wetterhahn’s innovative approach to science. “She was absolutely a pioneer in big-team, interdisciplinary, problem-based science,” Folt says, adding that Wetterhahn also understood the need to address public policy and community education in research programs on this scale.

Here’s chemist and historian Larry Principe. Lawrence Principe: It didn’t make sense to me that chemistry suddenly sprang out of nowhere at some point in the 18th century. Kerri: Larry’s a professor at Johns Hopkins University, and he studies the history of alchemy as a window into the origins of modern chemistry. Lawrence Principe: So, much of what I’ve been doing is trying to figure out what kind of practices and ideas the alchemists had and how those relate to later chemistry to argue for a continuity of ideas and practices, really, from the Middle Ages, or even before from the Islamic Middle Ages, up to the present.
