Plant PCR. This kit contains reagents to rapidly extract genomic DNA from plant leaves and amplify targets of interest by PCR. Each kit provides a single-step extraction in less than 15 min. The extraction solution eliminates the need for freezing plant tissues.
Sigma 150

Software. VolSurf predicts and optimizes the pharmacokinetic properties of potential drug candidates. It is used in the pharmaceutical industry to predict the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion properties of potential new drugs in vivo. This allows scientists to predict how drugs will react in the body and to identify those with unsuitable bioavailability before they move into later, more expensive stages of development.
Tripos 151

Combinatorial chemistry. The Büchi Syncore System uses a modular concept to increase efficiency and productivity in parallel and combinatorial chemistry. Besides three complete systems (reactor reaction station, polyvap parallel evaporator, and analyst), customization options are available such as adding various racks and accessories to the basic Syncore platform. Four to 96 samples can be run simultaneously in volumes of up to 500 mL.
Brinkmann 152

Molecular analysis service. Taconic offers DNA assays, DNA assay transfer and verification, and DNA extraction and purification. Genotyping assays include Southern blot, PCR, and slot blot, depending on the gene of interest. The company transfers assays to its laboratories and uses well-defined and advanced testing methods to produce consistent results.
Taconic Biotechnology 153

Microscope. The Infinity-Plus has an ergonomic design that reduces user strain. Users have the flexibility of selecting and installing modules such as epifluorescence units, drawing attachments, observation body risers, and cameras.
Unico 154

Amperometric detector. The 817 Bioscan is designed for use with a modular IC system. This instrument determines carbohydrates and analyzes alcohols, sugar alcohols, and other oxidizable substances. This detector can be operated in three modes: dc, pulse, and scan. It is fully PC-controlled and has a low-maintenance detector cell and a column oven for precise temperature control.
Metrohm-Peak 155

Apoptosis. This tool measures the collapse of mitochondrial membrane potential (deltapsi) during apoptosis. MitoShift is a cationic dye that displays a distinctive shift in its fluorescence spectra upon mitochondrial uptake.
Trevigen 156

Gels. These prestained, high-sensitivity agarose gels deliver DNA detection levels up to 10 times greater than those of ethidium bromide. The gels incorporate a buffer, stain, and tracking dye system that requires smaller DNA load levels and optimizes resolution and detection.
BioWhittaker 157

Target tracking system. Discovery Portfolio alerts the drug discovery scientist of changes made to relevant public and proprietary information databases. This system allows the user to view public and third-party proprietary databases in an integrated way, receive notification of changes to the underlying databases, and build and manage an individual portfolio of drug targets. It also provides access to underlying proprietary data through subscription or purchase.
BioWisdom 158

DNA ladder. This marker consists of DNA fragments in 100-bp increments from 100 to 1000 bp and another fragment of 1500 bp. This product is ideal for determining the size of double-stranded DNA from 100 to 1000 bp. The 500-bp fragment is present at a higher concentration and therefore displays greater intensity on ethidium bromide gels.
CPG 159

Spectrometer. The P/ACE MDQ-LCQ Deca instrument provides an alternative to the existing turnkey CE-MS/MS platform. It combines the P/ACE MDQ capillary electrophoresis system with the LCQ Deca mass spectrometer.
Beckman Coulter 160

Turntable. This device is lightweight, sturdy, chemical-resistant, and portable. A ball-bearing turntable provides a smooth, even motion for consistent distribution of cultures. This hand-operated unit accommodates Petri dishes of three different diameters: 60, 95, and 100 mm. The turntable, which is made of polyethylene, has a recessed stabilizing pad made of nonskid neoprene.
Bel-Art Products 161

Solvent dispenser. The Dispensette Organic safely and precisely handles THF, TFA, DMF, DMSO, methanol, acetonitrile, methylene chloride, concentrated acids, and peroxides. This device provides convenient and reliable dispensing for HPLC and combinatorial chemistry laboratories.
BrandTech Scientific 162

Analyzer. The Hydrosorb 1000 offers rapid, fully automated measurement of adsorption and desorption water isotherms, including BET surface-area calculations. The fully integrated control system provides color real-time status, graphical data review, and reporting functions via a built-in color monitor and a printer port. Data in ASCII format are uploaded to a PC via RS232 for importing into popular spreadsheet programs for further manipulation.
Quantachrome 163

Software. ArrayVision 6.0 is used to analyze gene expression arrays. This updated version incorporates features that enable true autoalign for high-throughput fluorescent array processing and automatic export. The software also features wizards for complete walk-away batch processing. The program automatically finds the array, calculates array rotation, positions the template, and aligns each spot for analysis. Other features include simplified gene-name import for clone tracking, and automatic and rapid export to a variety of file formats.
Imaging Research 164

Catalog. “Tools for Scientists” features new temperature controllers and safety products such as dual controllers, variable voltage control, laboratory jacks, and cooling systems.
Instruments for Research and Industry 165

Spectrometer. The BioTOF II is a high-resolution (R . 20,000) ESI-TOF instrument. It is used to study proteins and noncovalently bound complexes such as drug–protein, protein–protein, and protein–ligand interactions. In addition, the BioTOF II is used in proteomics, genomics, and peptide applications.
