Mass Flow Sensors for GC, HPLCMass Flow Sensors for GC, HPLC

For more than 30 years, thermal mass flow measurements using coils around steel capillaries have been the standard in the precise measurement and dosing of mass flow rates.

Now CMOSens technology from Sensirion AG (Zurich, Switzerland) integrates this basic physical measuring principle in an extremely fast, miniaturized thermal sensor with all of the high-precision signal-conditioning circuitry on a single CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) microchip.

For liquid mass flow measurement in LC applications, lab-on-a-chip systems and liquid handling, CMOSens microchips can be placed in the position of being able to detect flow rates in the range of a few microliters or nanoliters per minute. Mounted on the outside of fused silica, PEEK, or steel capillaries, the highly sensitive CMOSens microchips detect the flow through the tubing material and a simple straight capillary forms the flow path. Further, by using this technology, great repeatability for analyses—the most important criterion in HPLC—is ensured. It works totally media isolated and with minimized inner volume, so the reliable monitoring of the process is guaranteed.

The fused silica-based, fully digital, calibrated, and temperature-compensated liquid flow sensor SLG1430 works with a repeatability greater than 0.8% of the measured value and achieves a fast response time of <50 ms. Moreover, the device offers resolutions of 0.5 nL/min and better. It is equipped with microfluidic connectors for OD360 capillaries and a digital RS232 interface. Ultra-fast response times in the millisecond range help users to monitor effects in their systems that they have not previously been able to observe.

Gas Generator.The model N2-15 is a self-contained membrane nitrogen generator that produces 99% pure nitrogen with pressures up to 100 psig. High- and low-pressure compressors filtered by high-efficiency coalescing filters remove all contaminants down to 0.01 µm. Hollow fiber membranes subsequently separate the clean air into a concentrated nitrogen stream and oxygen-enriched permeate stream, which is vented from the system.

Gas Purifiers.The Valco helium purifier provides point-of-use gas purification of helium or other noble gases, such as Ar, Ne, Kr, and Xe, to sub-ppm levels of reactive gaseous impurities. The nitrogen purifier does the same for nitrogen. The gas purification substrate in Valco gas purifiers is a non-evaporable heat-activated gettering alloy, in a welded assembly for safety.

Mixers.These modular units can be customized to almost any size. Containing a high-torque stepping motor for precise control for demanding applications, the high- or low-speed mixing (orbital) assists in obtaining repeatable mixing results. Some applications include process development and combinatorial chemistry. Mixer is controlled through a PC with Glas-Col’s Labnetix software or with the aid of a virtual instrument for Labview.

Elemental Analyzer.The Multi EA 3100 model achieves detection limits of 10 ppb for sulfur determination by UV fluorescence and 50 ppb for nitrogen determination by chemiluminescence. With luminescence methods, there is no interference between sulfur and nitrogen in case of low sulfur and high nitrogen contents. The detection limit for chlorine determination is 100 ppb.

Calibration Service.Temperature calibrations are provided for resistance-type measuring devices like liquid gas thermometers and thermistors. Fixed-point primary calibrations and secondary calibrations can be performed for less accurate temperature devices. Calibrations can be tailored to customers’ specifications from -196 to 700 °C in an ISO/IEC 17025-compliant setting.

Monochromator.The TEEM system has been developed to detect sub-ppb levels of explosives, environmental contaminants, compounds associated with chemical warfare agents, and bacterial spores. Using a patented ionization technique, it will eliminate spectral interferences, clearly illuminating minute traces of specific compounds in samples of dirt, packing foam, and other substances. It also forms negative ions without using a moderating gas and produces an electron beam with an electron energy that can be adjusted from 0 to 25 eV.

Distillation System.The Midi-Vap 2000 supports semiautomatic colorimetry methods for drinking, surface, saline, and domestic and industrial wastewaters, using up to 10 economically sized samples. The units meet EPA/600/R-93/100 methods for the determination of inorganic substances in environmental samples and are available in three complete component assemblies to process water samples for ammonia, cyanide, and phenols, or in a combination assembly that permits processing of all three.

It also includes an integral stirring mechanism, which is designed to efficiently mix at low speeds while avoiding damage to fragile cells.
