WCC Announces Travel Grants
The ACS Women Chemists Committee (WCC) has awarded travel grants to cover expenses associated with attending scientific meetings within the U.S. from Jan. 1 through June 30. The grants are awarded to women who are presenting research for the first time at a national meeting. The 14 recipients are 10 graduate students and four undergraduates. The WCC travel grant program is sponsored by Eli Lilly.
Kathleen Daugherty, a graduate student in Lisa A. Kelly's group at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, attended the Inter-American Photochemical Society Winter Conference in Clearwater Beach, Fla.
Karen Howard, a graduate student in James Mike's group at Youngstown State University, in Ohio, will attend Pittcon 2003 in Orlando, Fla.
Nilu Jayasuriya, a graduate student in Peter Wipf's group at the University of Pittsburgh, will attend the ACS national meeting in New Orleans.
Michelle Lee and Julie Schallhorn, undergraduate chemistry students of Kendall N. Houk's at the University of California, Los Angeles, will attend the ACS national meeting in New Orleans.
Elizabeth Minich, a graduate student in Darrin J. Pochan's group at the University of Delaware, will attend the spring meeting of the Materials Research Society in San Francisco.
Dwella Nelson, a graduate student in R. Kenneth Marcus' group at Clemson University, will attend Pittcon 2003 in Orlando.
Sejal Patel, a graduate student in Timothy F. Jamison's group at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will attend the ACS national meeting in New Orleans.
Yetta Porter, a graduate student in P. Shiv Halasyamani's group at the University of Houston, will attend the ACS national meeting in New Orleans.
Sarah Schmidtke, a graduate student of David A. Blank's at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, will attend the ACS national meeting in New Orleans.
Deborah M. Smith, a graduate student in Keith A. Woerpel's group at the University of California, Irvine, will attend the ACS national meeting in New Orleans.
Jennifer Tinsley, a graduate student of William R. Roush's at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, will attend the ACS national meeting in New Orleans.
Rebecca Wolfe, an undergraduate chemistry student of Mary K. Carroll's at Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., will attend the ACS national meeting in New Orleans.
Ekaterina Zelenova, an undergraduate chemistry student of Dina C. Merrer's at Barnard College, New York City, will attend the ACS national meeting in New Orleans.
WCC is again soliciting applications for its travel program. Sept. 15 is the deadline for submitting applications for grants for meetings to be held between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2004.
To apply for an award, submit a résumé and an official application form along with an abstract of the work to be presented and a letter detailing the reasons--both scientific and financial--you want the award and specifying whether you have made a previous presentation at a major meeting. A letter from your adviser confirming your participation in the meeting is also required.
