Six areas of concentrated programming have been identified as follows: catalysis; chemistry and computers; environmental issues; materials; medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry; and biotechnology, biochemistry, and biological chemistry. In the technical program that begins on symposia that fall within these themes are identified by a symbol that immediately precedes the session title.

The exposition will be open Monday, Aug. 19, through Wednesday, Aug. 21. Displays of everything from books and instruments to computer hardware and scientific software will be featured by more than 300 companies and organizations. Exposition workshops are just one opportunity for chemists to fine-tune their skills; other opportunities for continuing education are offered through ACS short courses and other workshops as well as through Chemical Abstracts Service seminars.

Presidential events include the "Workshop on Interdisciplinary Science: Opportunities, Challenges, Policy, and Practices," which features among its speakers Rita R. Colwell, director of the National Science Foundation. "The Impact of Globalization and Consolidation on the U.S. Chemical Industry, with Special Emphasis on Research" features Deputy Secretary of Commerce Samuel W. Bodman and the chief executive officers of DuPont, Rohm and Haas, Dow Chemical, and Bayer Corp.

The themes of diversity and women in chemistry are evident in several symposia in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Women Chemists Committee and organized by WCC as well as by the Committee on Minority Affairs.

On Wednesday, "The Chemistry and Biology of Terrorism and Homeland Security," organized by the Division of Chemical Toxicology and with speakers from academia and government agencies, provides an opportunity for attendees to raise their awareness of the policy issues surrounding chemical and biological terrorism.

As always, tours and social events have been facilitated for the enjoyment of meeting attendees.

You can still register online even though advance registration closed on July 19. Attendees who register via the Internet using a credit card between July 20 and Aug. 9 will pay on-site registration but will not have to stand in line on-site to register. TRANSPORTATION

AIR TRANSPORTATION. The ACS Meetings Department has entered into an agreement with Association Travel Concepts (ATC) to help facilitate travel arrangements for attendees to ACS meetings. ATC is a travel agency that works exclusively with the association market. In addition to providing reservation assistance for our official air carriers, ATC will "fare shop" all airlines to find the absolute lowest fare. You can also take advantage of these new services offered by ATC:

Trip Manager: An online reservation system programmed to include ACS special discounts at www.tripmanager.com. Type in ACS for Company, type in new user for Member ID, and click Submit.

Power Pricing: A computer software search for the best fare on all airlines.

Resfax: Fax-back service with 36 options and prices for your requested travel times.

For more information, contact ATC at (800) 458-9383; fax (858) 581-3988; e-mail: atc@assntravel.com; or on the Internet at http://www.assntravel.com. As always, you may use your own travel agent or contact the airline of your choice directly.

  • 5% off any applicable published excursion domestic fares (10% off if purchased 60 days or more before travel--special conditions apply).
