Unprecedented Gift To Caltech

SUSAN MORRISSEY

Intel cofounder Gordon E. Moore and his wife, Betty, will donate $600 million over the next 10 years to California Institute of Technology. This is the largest gift ever made to a single American university. The gift, half of which comes from the Moores and half from the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation, will be used for mutually agreed-upon educational and scientific programs aimed at keeping Caltech at the forefront of science and technology, as well as sustaining its multidisciplinary work.

Gordon and Betty Moore
COURTESY OF CALTECH
Moore received a Ph.D. in chemistry from Caltech in 1954 before moving on to cofound Intel in 1968. His many contributions to the semiconductor world include the formulation of Moore's law, which states that the number of transistors per integrated circuit will double every 18 months.

Both Moore and his wife consider Caltech an important part of their lives. "The education I received there has served me well," he noted. "We are hoping this gift will position the institute well as it moves forward."
