—Sponsored content: Packing the right molecules for the great outdoors “Cutting-edge chemistry makes recreation in the wild more enjoyable—and more comfortable. ” Eighteen years ago, Chris Funke moved to Tarifa, a whitewashed town on Spain’s southernmost tip. Tarifa has it all: hills, forests, rock faces, the ocean. Funke moved there to establish Girasol, an outdoor recreation company. A tall, lean German, Funke spends every day in the great outdoors, teaching rock climbing or leading hiking and biking tours in Los Alcornocales National Park. “I love to be outdoors,” even overnight, Funke says. Some nights, he’s camped high in the nearby Sierra Nevada; other times he beds down on the beach. Funke has spent most of his life outdoors and, over the years, has witnessed many improvements in the gear he uses, such as new garment and tent textiles and ultralight solar chargers. Chemistry drives many of these technologies. Snug and drY Funke also has to deal with the elements when he leads a hike.
