High-capacity, low-noise microarray slides.
Almost since the inception of the technology, two trouble spots for
microarray slides have been autofluorescence and low DNA-binding capacity. To
address these problems, Schott Nexterion, a member of the Schott Group, has utilized
its expertise in glass production to develop and market Nexterion Slide A.

The new slide was developed with a chemically durable borosilicate glass that
is particularly suited for use in microarray slides, as it exhibits low autofluorescence
at the Cy3 and Cy5 fluorescent probe excitation wavelengths. As a result of the
low autofluorescence of the glass substrate, the sensitivity of a microarray assay
is essentially enhanced.
To improve the DNA-binding capacity of the slides, Schott Nexterion designers
engineered a multifunctional aminosilane coating that provides a higher positive
surface charge at pH values typical for common spotting solutions like SSC and
phosphate buffer (pH 7.08.5), compared with conventional monofunctional
aminosilane slides. The improved binding capacity, together with the low autofluorescence
of the slides, makes high signal-to-noise ratios achievable. The slides exhibit
a better spot morphology and enable highly reproducible test results.
Schott Nexterion slides are checked for both intraslide and batch-to-batch
consistency and are laser-cut to provide smooth edges with exact tolerances, greatly
reducing the risk of contamination by glass particles. Furthermore, the slide
dimensions are compatible with all commonly used microarray printers and scanners.
