Here are six of the dozens of chemists that Google X has charged with making its moon shots a reality.

Vasiliki Demas (Ph.D., chemical engineering, UC Berkeley): Leads the biomedical systems engineering team and previously worked at T2 Biosystems on nanoparticle diagnostics. Tamara Troy (Ph.D., chemical engineering, Purdue University): Works on the biomedical systems engineering team and is an expert in biomedical optics. She previously worked on novel preclinical optical imaging modalities at Caliper Life Sciences. Marija Pavlovic (M.Sc., chemical and biochemical engineering, University of Belgrade): Works for the molecular and cellular biology team and previously worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to elucidate mechanisms of DNA damage by ionizing radiation. Zenghe Liu (Ph.D., chemistry, Caltech): Leads the electrochemistry team. His accomplishments include the sensor technology for Google’s “smart contact lens.” Previously, he worked in the diabetes care division at Abbott Laboratories. Gary Tong (Ph.D., chemistry, UC Berkeley): Works on the chemistry and chemical biology team and was previously a postdoctoral fellow with Jay Keasling in synthetic biology and metabolic engineering. Z. Jane Wang (Ph.D., chemistry, UC Berkeley): Works on the chemistry and chemical biology team. She is a Hertz Fellow and was a postdoctoral fellow with Caltech’s Frances Arnold, working on directed evolution methods.
