Europe's Young Chemists

Earlier this year, almost 120 young chemists from Europe entered the 2006 European Young Chemist Award competition. Sponsored by the Italian Chemical Society and other European chemical societies, the award is intended to showcase and recognize Europe’s early-career chemical scientists. The 14 finalists presented their work in a special session at the first European Chemistry Congress in Budapest, Hungary, at the end of August C&EN Senior Correspondent Michael Freemantle asked the finalists, including first prize winner Jonathan Nitschke, to outline their current research interests and career ambitions.
