Crop Analytics

Plant breeding is one of the oldest sciences. Ages ago, gatherers picked the best varieties of certain plants - the ones that bore the largest, best tasting, most ample fruit, for example - and left the others behind. By planting the choicest variety of seeds and choosing the best of that crop for seed for the next planting, generations of growers slowly cultivated plant lines with desirable traits. Nowadays, breeding crops such as corn, shown here, is sped up by a host of analytical methods that help evaluate and predict plant properties, often by analyzing seeds' DNA. Some of the instruments that support modern crop analytics at Monsanto are shown in this photo collection.
