Being well-rounded often means having interests outside of one’s research, says Gary Allred, president of Synthonix, a contract research organization in Wake Forest, N.C. These activities can provide insights into what additional skills the person might bring to the job, he says. “If someone likes to work on cars, it tells me they’re good with wrenches and if something goes down, they might be able to fix it,” Allred says.

A symposium attendee approached Allred to ask whether Synthonix “had any arsoles.” Allred’s response? “We used to have one, but we had to let him go.” And with that one quip, a successful marketing campaign was born. No sooner had Synthonix started running print ads with the “No Arsoles” graphic than the firm started receiving e-mail requests for coffee mugs and T-shirts emblazoned with the very same image.

Like Adesis, Synthonix focuses on hard-to-find compounds. The Wake Forest, N.C.-based firm was founded in 2003 by Gary Allred and Jonathan Scoggins in response to what Allred, its CEO, says was a need for highly functionalized heterocycles that weren’t just simple variations of substituted benzene rings.
