Bean, a professor in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago, then presented his talk, “The Atmospheres of Extrasolar Planets as Revealed by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).” Bean discussed the history and development of the JWST, how its 18 gold-plated mirrors were aligned and focused, and some preliminary atmospheric data for an extrasolar planet (a planet revolving around a star other than our sun) that have already been collected by the telescope.

Dresselhaus-Marais and Ofori-Okai say this kind of research will help in the development of materials for nuclear fusion reactors and lead to basic insights into geology and astronomy. But the new beam will also aid the study of less extreme systems. SLAC scientist Kristjan Kunnus looks forward to having easier ways to study molecules in solution.

Exoplanet research is “one of the most dynamic areas of astronomy, and it’s bringing in new areas like chemistry and astrobiology,” Sarah Kendrew of the European Space Agency says. She’s an expert on the JWST’s Mid-Infrared Instrument. The JWST was initially scheduled to launch in 2007. The 14 years of delays have had a silver lining, says exoplanet researcher Laura Kreidberg of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy.
