David Yankovitz, a chemical analyst at Deloitte, says companies will capitalize on years of heavy investment in core IT infrastructure —projects that have introduced mobile devices, sales portals, and a shift of enterprise computing to the cloud. Rothman and Yankovitz concur that the next phase of investment across the industry will center on improving supply chain resilience and on transparency, particularly in managing carbon dioxide emissions.

Clemmer Sponsor: Waters Corporation Citation: For the development of hybridized ion mobility–mass spectrometry techniques for the analysis and characterization of protein conformations and complex biomolecular mixtures Current position: Distinguished Professor, Indiana University Education: BS, chemistry, Adams State College; PhD, physical chemistry, University of Utah Clemmer’s message for his younger self: “I would tell myself to make fewer commitments and protect large blocks of time.” What Clemmer’s colleagues say: “It is David’s invention and development of nested ion mobility–mass spectrometry instrumentation and methodology that inspired this nomination. These pioneering techniques are now mainstays of an extraordinarily broad range of analyses spanning academic, chemical, and pharmaceutical industry, and national laboratory research.”

“The profitability of the mobility segment is not high at present, and it is hard to position the whole of the segment as a core business,” Yamada says. As for autologous cells, maintaining competitiveness “requires comparatively large investment, including an increase in human resources when the market expands,” he says.

Then they developed a mobile app to decode the colors from the tattoos (Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2019, DOI: 10.1002/anie.201904416). “We can utilize this smartphone camera as a portable spectrophotometer,” he says. The data are only semiquantitative but could help patients and doctors keep tabs on medical conditions through continuous monitoring at home.

He calculated that these mobile sources would have had to be responsible for between 60 and 90% of the compound’s emissions to explain its decline during the pandemic. In contrast, the US Environmental Protection Agency attributes around 20% of LA’s ammonia to cars. Understanding urban ammonia sources has been hard to do because ammonia is a finicky molecule to study.

Plus, PVA in aquatic ecosystems can mobilize toxics such as metals, pesticides, and flame retardants from sediments to waters, they say. One study found PVA particles, in addition to other types of microplastics, in human breast milk (Polymers, 2022, DOI: 10.3390/polym14132700) The petition to the EPA is not Blueland’s first move in debates around PVA biodegradability.

One tool they developed to aid these efforts is the Marine Debris Tracker mobile app, which allows anyone to log observations of plastic debris in an open-source data set that could help researchers monitor pollution on a global scale as well as provide information to individual communities. Communicating science is “a key component to informing policy,” Jambeck writes in an email to C&EN.

In addition, about a third of all jobs in the US require some sort of training besides a 4-year college degree, according to a survey by Opportunity America, a think tank that promotes economic mobility. And community colleges have been key to providing it. At Delaware Technical Community College, for example, students who go through its training programs for chemical process operators have a 100% job placement rate, says Katherine Lakofsky, the school’s director of workforce development and community education.
