To satisfy the European Commission’s concern that the deal would create too dominant a player in thermoplastic copolyesters, Celanese has offered to sell its thermoplastic copolyester business, and a plant in Ferrara, Italy, to Taro Plast, an Italian maker of engineering plastics. The block copolymers have both thermoplastic and elastomeric properties and are used heavily in the auto industry.

Beckham of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, part of the consortium Bio-Optimized Technologies to Keep Thermoplastics out of Landfills and the Environment (BOTTLE), which led the research. After the metal catalysts have been recovered, engineered Pseudomonas putida bacteria get to work on the soup of carboxylic acids, digesting them through multiple biochemical pathways into a single product—an approach known as biological funneling.

In contrast to thermoplastics, which can be remolded and reused because they soften and melt when heated, thermoset resins burn when heated. Thermosets have provided blade manufacturers with the right combination of mechanical properties, durability, and cost, so they have been the standard material for decades, but they make recycling difficult and impractical.

Novoloop is developing a technology to convert postconsumer polyethylene into chemicals such as thermoplastic polyurethanes. DSM has agreed to buy Prodap, a Brazilian animal nutrition and technology firm, for an undisclosed price. Prodap, which has 330 employees, provides nutrition, consulting, and technology services for farmers of cattle and other ruminants.

It is also a major supplier of polybutylene terephthalate and thermoplastic composites. DSM likewise makes basic nylons such as 6 and 6,6. It also has a strong business in high-end nylons like 4,6 and 4,10, and it produces the engineering polymer polyphenylene sulfide. Advent is a frequent investor in chemicals.

Late last year, it bought ExxonMobil’s Santoprene thermoplastic vulcanizate business for $1.15 billion. Celanese and DuPont left DuPont’s Delrin polyacetal business out of the deal to ease approval from antitrust authorities. Celanese’s Richardson told analysts that he doesn’t expect regulators to require any meaningful concessions before approving the transaction.

—Arkema and Brunswick plan fully recyclable boat “” The specialty chemical maker Arkema is working with Brunswick to develop a recyclable boat that uses Arkema’s Elium thermoplastic in fiberglass-resin composite parts such as the hull. Unlike the thermoset resins traditionally used in fiberglass composites, Elium can be depolymerized or dissolved to recover resin and glass fibers, Arkema says.
